The Heritage Preservation Commission of St. Paul announced its list of awards for 2006 last month. Among the 12 winners, including several single family restorations, two books, a magic shop, artist's lofts, and ongoing contributions by an individual, were two Cermak Rhoades projects.
While a third of the awards went to single family homes in wealthy, historic neighborhoods, the CRA projects provided a strong counterpoint as examples of affordable housing. Crane-Ordway apartments is an adaptive reuse of a plumbing warehouse in downtown St. Paul that now holds 70 units of affordable housing. (See a previous post on a unique design solution.) 736 Dayton Avenue is a new-construction single-family home in an historic neighborhood, and the only new project to win an HPC award this year.
