origins of the green roof:
Green roofs – specifically turf roofs – developed separately in the vernacular architecture of both Scandinavia and Kurdistan to help deal with local, extreme climates.
During the late 1800’s some theaters in New York City, most notably Winter Garden and Madison Square Garden, incorporated green roofs in an attempt to extend the theater season through the hot summer months.
