PROJECT: The Great Northern Historic Riverside Lofts

LOCATION
St. Paul, Minnesota

PROJECT DESCRIPTION
This renovation project converted the historic 1888 J.J. Hill "Great Northern Railroad" office building into fifty-two luxury condominiums. Extensive foundation and building stabilization allowed the distinctive Romanesque building, listed on the National Register, to be restored to use after remaining vacant for thirty years. Historic details, such as the ornamental central stair and main lobby, were restored or recreated in the spirit of the original. Plans for the dwelling units capitalize on the building's features, including barrel-vaulted ceilings and large windows. Upper floor units have rooftop decks and dramatic views of the Mississippi River and downtown St. Paul.
